English evolves and accommodates. It transcends from generation to generation and absorbs global influence. Being schooled in a convent, we used to say, ‘ I beg your pardon’ in case we skipped hearing or were unclear about a concept.
Post the pandemic and online classes, chatting has become the accessible method to communicate across all ages. Perhaps, that is where “WHAT” has gained prominence. And yes, It did take me to blend with this trend.
As I coached a 3rd grader to say, “ pardon” he said “ what?” with a quizzical look on his face. Thus, pardon is unheard for the Gen Alpha. Gen Z chooses to ignore it.
Pardon is now replaced by “What?” Though, there is no impudence or impoliteness in using it, we can certainly guide our kids to replace “What?” with the following suggestions.
- Please repeat.
- Could you say that again please?
- Come again
- I did not get that right. Do say it once more.
I know, am addressing a generation gap here. But imbibing soft skills are also part of growth and success. “What?” is your opinion?
