Overcome procrastination with the Salami technique

Spread the love

Do goals overwhelm you? Do you find yourself postponing certain jobs? Is your giving you a new deadline for a task?

Procrastination as a tendency stems from these causes :

  1. Having a fear for failure.
  2. Getting overwhelmed by the outcome.
  3. Have poor time management skills.
  4. Unable to prioritize tasks.
  5. A penchant for perfection.
  6. High amount of distractibility .

In my counselling sessions, I have encountered several clients who are extremely talented but often defer the tasks. One of the ways to overcome #procrastination is the #salamiechnique.

Herein, slicing the salami ( task ) into manageable portions makes it less overwhelming. Small parts are given goals and once each slice ( part of task) is achieved, the individual feels less conscious of the final goal. Thereby, small spurts  yield to the final output.

Example : A student has to submit an essay, she understands the deadline and she does one para at a time – collating facts, researching an apt idiom or changing a synonym. Thus the daunting tasks of adhering to word count or editing in one go does not overwhelm the student. Well begun is half done!

Thus this technique validates the individual, motivates and builds self-assurance. Try it and let me know in comments.
