The ‘Dear Diary’ writing taught in schools can be easily employed in real life too for kids to understand their emotions. In fact, I would highly recommend journaling for parents to let out their struggles and also note down their happiness in life.
Journaling is not only about pent up emotions it is also to note down the tiny doses of happiness that you feel. Once habitual, it is a wonderful way to express emotions.
While there are so many self-help modalities, journaling helps you validate yourself. It helps in self awareness and it is as if the journal talks to you and reflects your emotional reactions.
An adult client expresses, “ I thought it seems like a chore and how do I make time for this? But once begun, it gave me such a release of the pent-up emotions. In fact, I carry the journal with me always.”
There is no fixed time or time slot in the day to journal. Also, journaling does not always mean long paragraphs. It could be just a ‘ WORD’ that comes up to your mind to give you a better understanding of self.
There are several formats for journaling. An elaborate idea is also to decorate the same with pictures doodles or an emoji.
But if you are beginner, use a free flow method to express your thoughts.
Feel lighter, Feel validated, Feel the feeling.
